Yelp-ationing: Seattle

A few weeks ago, I traveled cross-country to watch my best friend run the Seattle Rock-N-Roll Half Marathon! Seattle, well, the Pacific Northwest in general, is one of those places that I have been itching to visit for years but never get around to it. And what better excuse did I have to visit Seattle than cheering on my best friend? So, she and I, along with a few friends planned mini-trips within Seattle and to Vancouver.

Let me just say that, Seattle did not disappoint. From gastronomic experiences to getting stuck on gum (gross), scroll down for my what’s good guide to Seattle.

PPCLUNCH – Pike Place Chowder

Yelp Rating: 4.5/5

Patty’s Rating: 5/5

As a group of us walked up to Pike Place Market, we noticed the line wrapped around the restaurant. I passed over 50 customers waiting in line and took my place at the back, determined to have some chowder. As I waited, I logged on to Yelp in my typical quest for recommendations and found a great Yelp deal (3-chowder sampler for $8). What was even better was that, in the 20 minutes I spent perusing PPC’s Yelp page, I was already at the counter to order. Three minutes later I was enjoying my Clam, Corn and Salmon chowders, all of which were beyond excellent!

purple cafeDINNER – Purple Cafe + Wine Bar

Yelp Rating: 4/5

Patty’s Rating: 4/5

Purple Cafe was my first taste of Pacific Northwestern fare during my trip to Seattle. A large group of us made reservations and, while we arrived fairly late, were easily accommodated. The staff was ridiculously friendly and more than willing to talk about their meal suggestions. I tickled my table’s palettes with our first taste of poutine (well, PC’s version of it) and it was BEYOND delicious. I ordered a quinoa salad for my entree and added a side of chicken. My experience would have been stellar had I opted out of the chicken. While the quinoa salad was fresh, light and delicious, the chicken was cold and bland.

Simply DessertDESSERT – Simply Desserts (Fremont, Seattle)

Yelp Rating: 4/5

Patty’s Rating: 5/5

Although I sported a pretty nasty headache, the delicious smell of chocolate that hit me as I walked into Simply Desserts was very welcoming. This sweet shop is unassuming, which gives it that much more charisma. All cakes, cookies, cupcakes and pies are made in the back and you can definitely taste it. My friends and I split the German Chocolate Cake, a crazy cupcake concoction and two deliciously chocolaty cookies. That, mixed with the coffee that the store attendant made us, was more than enough to end the day on a sweet note.

Pike place marketATTRACTION – Pike Place Market

Yelp Rating: 4.5/5

Patty’s Rating: 3.5/5

“Where were the flying fish?” That is all I kept thinking about as I ran through the cliche that epitomized my view of Pike Place Market. I would never describe myself as a person who is particularly attracted to cliche things, but I couldn’t help but be a bit disappointed by the lack of fish flying into vendors hands. Instead, I was greeted by the strong, unwelcoming odor of fish (duh, I was in a fish market) and hordes of people probably in search of flying fish as well. To be fair, PPM had many redeeming qualities– from its rows of flowers to the most delicious looking and tasting fruit I have tasted. All in all, it was a cool experience, but a flying fish would have been FANTASTIC!

Fremont Troll

ATTRACTION – Fremont Troll (Fremont, Seattle)

Yelp Rating: 4.5/5

Patty’s Rating: 4.5/5

As my friends and I looked for parking for what seemed for hours, in a residential neighborhood that I never expected a troll to live in, but was pleasantly surprised to find, in a town that had a bunch of fun and oddball things to do, of which this was clearly the one I was most excited about because of the fact that trolls are awesome and that it has a bad-ass VW bug under its hand, which you can climb, all that I could think about was reenacting the scene from 10 Things I Hate About You. The troll was more difficult to climb than it seemed.

Gum Wall

ATTRACTION – Pike Place Market Gum Wall

Yelp Rating: 4/5

Patty’s Rating: 2/5

It smelled soooooooooo bad. That is all. Oh, and I stepped on way too much gum for my liking.
