You’ll Like This If: You like Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, films about relationships and life, and films with a lot of dialogue.
You’ll Hate This If: You hate slower films, movies that make you think, and indie productions.
The Short and Skinny: Before Midnight picks up nine years after Before Sunset. Jesse and Celine have two beautiful twin girls and live in Paris. The family takes up an offer from a writing colleague of Jesse’s to vacation for several weeks in Greece where they are joined by Jesse’s teenage son, Hank, who lives in Chicago with his mother. As the film progresses, we get a glimpse of Jesse and Celine’s relationship, their thoughts on life and love, and how they deal with being a family.
For fans of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, this film is a real treat. It feels more grounded while still maintaining what we loved in the first two films: the realness of Jesse and Celine’s relationship. The film isn’t all lovey dovey. It is genuine, enchanting, and feels very real. I promise you’ll fall in love with the couple all over again! If you’re new to the series, you won’t have an issue understanding who these people are and how they got there. Before Midnight does a really good job of explaining past events while still being a stand alone film. Enjoy this heartfelt experience that feels as real as a conversation between friends.
Keep or Pass: Keep!
